About the book

Without romance

This book is not for those looking for a beautiful spiritual experience. Plant Medicine is a hard school, and this book speaks about it as it is.

It gathers what Chonon Sany learned from Shipibo maestros and Q'ero masters over years of Dietas and ceremonies, and what he saw for himself working with people. In places he sets both traditions beside the Dzogchen teaching.

How the Call sounds and what keeps us from hearing it. Ayahuasca and tobacco as teacher plants. The Dieta as a pact with a plant. Icaros, spirits and powers, the ethics of the curandero. And the hardest part: bringing what you have lived back into ordinary life.

More than sixty practices of attention, breath and presence. None of them requires any substance. Photographs from the Amazon and the Andes.

El llamado no es una voz externa;
es la memoria del corazón.

The Call is not an outer voice; it is the memory of the heart.

Before you go any further

Plant medicine is a hard school. One of the hardest I know. And I know neurosurgery.

To become a real curandero — someone who can actually help — takes years of austerity, of Dietas, of solitude, of the breaking apart of who you thought you were. There is no romance of the forest and drums around the fire here. There is work you don't get to go home from.

You can make an incision with a well-sharpened scalpel of alloy steel. Or with a crude machete. Both cut. But the mark they leave is different.
